Sinamangal is a small town located west from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The town is populated with restaurants, schools, colleges and homes of thousands. The town at its early state was not as civilized as today but in recent years with the establishment of the Kathmandu Medical College and other important urban structures, the town became densely populated. The lack of proper distribution of the population in the area has induced an irregular growth of urbanization in the area. The structures clearly violet the Habitat II settlement criteria defined by WHO.
Sinamangal with all its initial problems lack a proper drainage system. The area in fact doesn’t contain a well defined drainage system. Some of the area is supplied with the drainage pipes but most of them are so old that the wastes bursts out of the pipes when there is a rainfall. The problem is so much severe that the drain comes out in the road especially in the monsoon therefore making it difficult to walk for the local people.
The roads are congested with no supply of footpaths for street walkers. The two corners are the only possible area for a walk. But the drain flows through these corners making it impossible to walk. This problem has brought about high air pollution in the area. Sometimes the roads are completely filled with drain which blocks the flow of traffic causing big traffic jams in the area.
The locals and the civic society are trying to correct the situation but there seems to be a lack of co-ordination as the problem increases day by day. The government also needs to put its thought about the problem and handle it. There should be a good collaboration between the locals, civic society and the government in order to solve this growing problem of Sinamangal.
Sinamangal is located near the Airport. Therefore, the tourists that enter Nepal sometimes are forced to judge the whole country as they pass through the streets at Sinamangal which is also the cause for the government to bring its eye in the area.
It is town of great Urbanization with a high population density. Therefore, the problem needs to be solved quickly so that it doesn’t become more severe.
