Democracy is……

February 11, 2009

The proper meaning of Democracy is what both the videos were trying to present. Both were trying to give a simple message relating to democracy. Both videos were included in the video challenge to give a proper meaning of the word Democracy in less than three minutes. Each documentary has given a unique view for the representation of the word Democracy.

Tshering Choden’s video for Democracy is different and unique for any Nepali filmmaker. The shots used in the documentary shows the state of the country in name of democracy. He shows the shots of polluted streets, rallies and the traffic problems created from those rallies. The documentary has kept a jazz music in the background, whilst people give there opinions about democracy and the so called new Nepal declared after the revolution of 2063 BS. The video has also introduced with rappers who give their views from the effects of democracy. Overall, the video completely focuses on the negative outcomes of declared undefined democracy in Nepal. In fact the video concentrates on the problems that an average man has from these outcomes. The video ends telling Democracy as a movement of the people.

Bigyan M Dixit’s video is about an imaginary concept relating Democracy with eggs and pigeons as a symbol of freedom when its in air. The term could be defined so many times equal to the number of persons. Hence he gives his views by comparing eggs as countries and pigeons as freedom. He then puts forward his opinion on democracy of a respective country by breaking the egg and readin the messages delivered from the broken eggs.  The video has a fluent pop music at the background as the director presents his ideas. The video focuses on the state of democracy in various countries. At the end of the video the filmmaker gives his opinion about democracy. He says that Democracy is like a free bird and that it shouldn’t be caught.

Both the videos give a unique prospective of Democracy. One defines democracy in terms of the opinions of the people whereas the other defines democracy in terms of the situation among various countries. As viewer, it could be said that both videos are different from each other in terms of the message they are trying to deliver although the topic remains the same.

The Drainage of Sinamangal.

February 11, 2009

Sinamangal is a small town located west from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The town is populated with restaurants, schools, colleges and homes of thousands. The town at its early state was not as civilized as today but in recent years with the establishment of the Kathmandu Medical College and other important urban structures, the town became densely populated. The lack of proper distribution of the population in the area has induced an irregular growth of urbanization in the area. The structures clearly violet the Habitat II settlement criteria defined by WHO.
Sinamangal with all its initial problems lack a proper drainage system. The area in fact doesn’t contain a well defined drainage system. Some of the area is supplied with the drainage pipes but most of them are so old that the wastes bursts out of the pipes when there is a rainfall. The problem is so much severe that the drain comes out in the road especially in the monsoon therefore making it difficult to walk for the local people.
The roads are congested with no supply of footpaths for street walkers. The two corners are the only possible area for a walk. But the drain flows through these corners making it impossible to walk. This problem has brought about high air pollution in the area. Sometimes the roads are completely filled with drain which blocks the flow of traffic causing big traffic jams in the area.
The locals and the civic society are trying to correct the situation but there seems to be a lack of co-ordination as the problem increases day by day. The government also needs to put its thought about the problem and handle it. There should be a good collaboration between the locals, civic society and the government in order to solve this growing problem of Sinamangal.
Sinamangal is located near the Airport. Therefore, the tourists that enter Nepal sometimes are forced to judge the whole country as they pass through the streets at Sinamangal which is also the cause for the government to bring its eye in the area.
It is town of great Urbanization with a high population density. Therefore, the problem needs to be solved quickly so that it doesn’t become more severe.

The Increasingly Stressed Bridge

Bridges located along the Bagmati River are getting older and increasingly stressed day by day which could damage or even destroy the bridge. One prominent example of such a scenario, is the bridge at Sinamangal located at the south-west corner from the gate to the Tribhuwan International Airport gate.

The bridge is already seriously damaged and there are roadblocks located at each side of the spoiled bridge in order to reduce the increasing stress on the bridge. To maintain the flow of the vehicles in the area an alternate diversion was created through the efforts of the locals and the civic society. Mr. Ritesh Maharjan, 24 years old says, “The diversion was created two months after the bridge was damaged.” Mr. Maharjan has been staying in the area for two years and is a student.

Mr. Bipin Thapa another student says, “Although the bridge has been replaced with a diversion, people still prefer to walk in the original.” Thapa further says,” There is extreme pollution on the diversion, the road is not pitched and therefore the preference for the diversion is very low among the locals.”

The problems with the diversion can be identified among the locals. But with increasing stress in an already damaged bridge can cause total collapse of the remains of the original with no chances of repair in the future. Mr. Maharjan agrees with the statement and says, “Everybody is always in a hurry and during this time nobody is expected to consider other problems except self-problems. I myself had to use the bridge once because I was in a complete rush and the problem had to be solved quickly.”

Science has proved that with increasing stress beyond the capacity of the stress level can lead to complete collapse and the Sinamangal Bridge has also met its complete stress level. The bridge is already severely damaged and with even a small stress like people walking on the bridge could create a catastrophe and can increase further more of the problems among the locals that it has brought now.

Arpan Sir’s Class

It was around half past seven that Arpan Sir’s class was expected to take place. Therefore, I had to get to the college quickly but with various difficulties we came to the college around eight. As we entered, I noticed a young man around mid twenties in a bike at the college gate. Mirak whispered with the man and I stood there thinking who this man really was? After they finished there conversation, I enthusiastically asked Mirak about the man. He told me that the man was in fact Arpan sir himself. I got surprised to find him so young. We then entered to the college and found the college building was locked. So Mirak and I stood there wondering where the class was to occur. I noticed that it was a foggy morning as the cold air touched my body. I began to shiver due to the chilly daybreak. Finally, after some moment, Swodesh came and told us that the class was going to occur at the new building. The three of us then went to the new building which was located at the back of the front. As we got to the class and I found Medha and Niraj already waiting for us. We all had a small conversation and waited for Arpan Sir.

As he came into the class, I sensed a small dissatisfaction in him as the class contained only a small minority of students. He was surprised to see me as I had attended the class for the first time in three weeks. I was ashamed at myself for not attending the class earlier but I sensed that he forgave me. As we started the class, I found that Arpan sir was a good teacher. He gave his fact based logic on a given subject and I found it interesting. The level of enthusiasm aroused as he presented his ideas on writing articles, on taking interviews, etc. As the time went by, he asked us to present an article on the Sinamangal bridge . Therefore at around nine, we all went near to the Sinamangal area and began to interview people. After taking several interviews, I came to the class and began to struggle with myself on writing an article on the bridge. It took me half an hour to write the report. Arpan sir then asked us to present the article in front of the class. I began to get a little nervous but at last I shared my piece of writing with the class. I was impressed that nobody had questions for the article and then Arpan Sir also complimented. But he suggested that the article would have been much better had I removed the opinion part. I thought that he was correct and learned that there shouldn’t be one’s opinion on his/her article. As the class ended I found that many of my own perception for presenting an article were not accurate and therefore I thought I had to change my perception. Arpan Sir’s class helped me learn to write the right kind articles and I hunger for more of his class.
